We are not sure what our 3 year old son is going to study or what is he going to take up as a profession but we want to make sure he becomes a responsible citizen of this country and hence we want to teach him the values that he is going to carry forward in his life.On way we felt we can feel empathy for the people in the society is by making him celebrate his birthday with children who are economically under priviledged. We work with a NGO called Premalayam (www.premalayam.in) who help us organize an event in and around his birthday in one of the schools they have adopted in Hyderabad. These schools which were earlier government schools are being provided funds and other resources like staff, books etc to help children learn better.Every year we take our son, Om there and spend a full day with the kids organizing cultural events, distributing prizes, having lunch etc. We hope Om will become sensitive to the fact that when we share the happiness we derive is invaluable. A small evidence of what he learnt was experienced when Om came and told us one day to buy him another bicycle because he wants to give the one he has to the watchman's daughter. When questioned, he said, "she is my friend and I want her to ride the cycle with me". We were more than pleased with his demand.Let us all teach our children to love everyone around and we are sure to see them growing into a happy individual.
